I received this laptop 2 weeks ago and everything seems to be working great. Runs Total War Empires just fine except that extended playing leads to the laptop heating up. For everyday use this laptop far exceeds the specs you need. For this price, I could not find a better deal.

The touchpad is an ALPS, not a Synaptics, serviceable once you get used to it. It is a bare bones touchpad, except for pinch-zoom, which is not very smooth.
The wireless is the Atheros AR5B93. It was a little flaky at first, but re-installing the drivers helped make it stable and pretty fast with in-house file transfers. (Note that I also did a clean-install of Windows 7, and that also helped performance and stability.)
Forget about the built in Realtek mic–our voices sound slurred and heavily synthesized, and the background hiss, regardless of settings, drowns voices out anyway. (Compare to the Aspire TimelineX 5820T: on that machine, the mic is great. I am NOT bashing ACER.)
The Webcam? Blurry and grainy no matter what settings.
The screen is fantastic with a native resolution of 1600 x 900; colors are accurate and brightness is easily adjustable. The HDMI works great with our HDTV. And the 7741g plays the older video games great (I haven’t tried anything newer than 2007.)
Also, the overall build quality seems fine, and the keyboard is very good–quiet and with just the right firmness to the keys. No significant flex. The lid closes well; the little rubber spacers set into the bezel do adequately protect the keyboard from getting mashed into the glossy display.
In closing, Acer cut some corners. Most users looking for the performance this promises will pay attention to touchpad, mic, and webcam. Don’t overlook the everyday things for which we buy laptops!
I’m going to buy a cheap headset for Skype, etc, but the webcam is part of the package.
I like the speed, screen, keyboard, and the way the laptop works great with our HDTV.
I could have spent a whole lot more on a laptop. These days, however, spending more does not guarantee better components, such as webcam and mic and touchpad. For example, the same mic problems are apparently happening on some more expensive VAIO machines, according to web searches. The higher end Acer TimelineX seems to have the exact same webcam. And game machines that cost double can’t type while the Synaptics drivers are active. Go freaking figure.
Bottom line: For the money, as others have already stated, this is a good machine. Try finding this great screen, keyboard, CPU and GPU in one package for less.

Just ordered one today… I bought a “dog” aspire from walmarts… lol! They hooked me on: 24 months no interest. I took it back the next day! LOL! It had an ATI 4250 and a 1.9 gig pentium x2. Loved the notebook and screen, but hated the performance. I’ve never owned a notebook before, because I did’nt like the stories about all the heat on the components…
And my gaming rig always beats an average notebook 2 or 3 times over for half the price! LOL! But, this one is a real steal!!! I saw a review on: Notebookcheck [...]) for the same book with a 2 gig Phenom quad and loved the review! This i5 should smoke that phenom and if the windows experience numbers on that are accurate, this one will be running close to my AMD FX-62 and 8800GTX… Eccept for the 55″ 1080p of course!
